The Guardian has published a good article that talks about the evolution of narrative techniques in today’s literature (http://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/feb/25/literary-fiction-twelve-best-new-novelists).
It says more experimental techniques are finding their way into mainstream novels as a way to tell stories better. It has led to new types of popular novels like Doc Murdock's "Psalm for Cock Robin" which uses dual protagonists that exist within one head and his "My Vietnam War" that uses first, second, and third person to represent a soldier’s mind spiraling down into PTSD (both books are advertised at the bottom of this page).
