: : The latest Hunger Games movie came out this week and broke some opening-weekend ticket sales records. Anybody seen it? Is it any good? Is it really science fiction or just a lot of fancy special effects (like in the trailer)?
: It's a strange mix of old hat cliches, with moments of ridiculous pseudo sci-fi. The movie itself is pretty boring, a lot of unnecessary character development up front (with predictable behavior and predictable outcomes) that leads to a remake of the old Thunder Dome story with fights to the death. Clothing is absurdly colorful, but pretty normal. Methods of travel are normal, mostly trains. But then, right in the middle of an endless string of cliched violence in the forest, the "evil rulers" create a bunch of living breathing animals out of thin air. Now that is something that no real sci-fi writer would do. Real sci-fi writers do not create pseudo science that breaks every law of physics. I think this story must have been created by an unleashed bunch of not so smart twelve year olds.
I think PLL pretty much nails it. Heck of a good review. The only thing he (or she) forgot to mention was that the movie stars a (nowadays-required) female hero who is kindly and modest, just your regular small-town girl, but who is not above calmly killing a bunch of people if they piss her off.
