The White Boat story was added in later editions. It's an example of how Roberts tied people and places together. The protagonist, Becky, dreams she sees everyone she knows melt into the landscape. Only their bones are left. In what is apparently not a dream, her village is blackened by the coal that underlies it. Everything in the village has turned black, including the people. The white boat is in stark contrast. She escapes the blackness of the village by swimming out to the boat where she undergoes change.
