Most would probably say Ulysses by James Joyce, but I think that's only because it's historically significant, a ground-breaking novel.

Other ground-breaking novels like Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes or would get some votes for the same reason.

Some might vote for anything by Jane Austen because it showed that women can write too (but have you ever actually tried to read Jane Austen?

But I would vote for novels that simply show great writing, like Moby-Dick by Herman Melville, or As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.

: Here's a question that always generates a lot of discussion (and a lot of disagreement): what is the greatest novel ever written?
