After reading your description of Murdock's book, I went to Amazon and clicked on LOOK INSIDE to read the first chapter. Heavy stuff, but seems to be exceptionally good writing. One reviewer said it should have won the National Book Award. Turns out the writer is a university professor. Okay, I was intrigued. I went to my local Barnes and Noble bookstore, and they didn't have it on the shelf, but they said they could order it for me. I ordered it. I'll report back after it arrives and I've read it.
