I've read that there is a whole division at Little, Brown dedicated to cranking out Patterson books. He writes an outline and wannabe writers are recruited to write the book. Although, like all new writers, he had trouble getting published at first, he finally got a couple of detective novels published. However, his early books didn't sell. But then he wrote his Alex Cross detective story, "Along Came a Spider." The book sold fairly well, so he focused on that detective series and the rest is history. Today, 51 different books with the name James Patterson on the cover have been on the New York Times best seller list. Although the critics say he isn't a very good writer, in the book-selling business the reader rules.

: James Patterson always seems to be on the New York Times best seller list. How can he write so many books, and how can they ALL be bestsellers?
