: : A new book by the former CIA station chief in Afghanistan, Robert L. Grenier, “88 Days to Kandahar: A CIA Diary,” basically says we did everything wrong there, and the only hope for the future is a permanent US military presence in the country (and that means forever).

: Didn't we already know is was all a mistake from the beginning? Didn't we already know we are now in a hopeless situation? The invasion served no purpose except to help keep all the "intelligence" agents from being fired and keep Bush from being impeached. It created a great recruiting tool for extremists.

I suspect if you took a poll of all US citizens, few would want to think that all those soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan died making things worse for the the U.S. By allowing the worst terrorist attack on American soil and in response starting two pointless wars, Bush went from being a weak president to being the most popular president in U.S. history. The American people love war, especially when it's against a weak country that can't fight back.
