I guess that explains the dramatic difference in victims of gun violence in the US as compared to Canada (2006).

Canada: 8,100 persons were victims of a crime committed with a firearm.

US: 477,040 persons were victims of a crime committed with a firearm.

: The continuing killings sprees involving guns in the United States require us to take a closer look at the issue of gun control. Unlike in the United States, the leaders of our neighbor nation to the north, Canada, have taken on the issue and have succeeded in passing new gun control laws even though the issue is as politically "sensitive" there as it is in the US.

: Below is a summary of their gun control laws. They might be a guide for how to deal with the current out-of-control situation regarding guns in the US.

: In Canada, ALL guns must be registered, and the information about the gun owner must be kept up to date. Failure to register or providing inaccurate information is a criminal offense.

: Handguns are limiting to ten rounds and all semi-automatic centrefire rifles are limited to 5 rounds.

: Most .32 and all .25 calibre handguns as well as handguns with barrels under 106 millimetres (4.2 in) are prohibited. Ownership of them is a crime.

: Applicants for a gun permit are screened by the federal government's police force and they are charged with maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of ownership.
