I heard it was by word of mouth. Somebody knew somebody on the Pulitzer committee. How else if you don't have the big influential publishers to push it and get favorable reviews on it no matter how crappy it is?

: We've all been reading about how a tiny, specialized publisher (Bellevue Literary Press) published a Pulitzer prize-winning novel (Tinkers by Paul Harding), but how did they manage to get the attention of the Pulitzer committee?
